Records of the Althouse, Bates, and Crompton Chemical Companies, 1903-2000 (bulk 1930-1999)

Many of these records came from a safe in the Reading, PA offices of Althouse Chemical Co., Inc. They are financial in nature and limited to the highest administrative levels. There are no sales records, payroll records or files relating to operating expenses. The Crompton material is more diverse and includes publicity materials, in-house employee publications, memos, Annual Reports and some proxy materials (relating to the merger with Witco Corporation). The collection was received in an organized state and processed as is, with a few exceptions. A scrapbook of Althouse-related material was disassembled, some factory plans were removed and stored separately, and a large quantity of loose Crompton material was re-arranged chronologically.

Crompton had begun as Crompton & Knowles Loom Works, but wished to move away from the manufacture of industrial equipment, a field with a narrowing future.
